Important Health Information
Gastrointestinal (GI) Bleeding
What is GI Bleeding?
GI bleeding means bleeding that begins somewhere in the digestive tract. It may be acute or chronic and may originate in the upper GI tract, small bowel or lower GI tract. GI bleeding is a sign or complication of another condition rather than a single disease by itself.
Possible causes
Causes vary according to where the bleeding arises and can include ulcers, gastritis, varices, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, hemorrhoids and other conditions.
How may it be investigated?
Evaluation can involve clinical assessment, blood/stool tests, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy or imaging, depending on the suspected source and severity. Endoscopic procedures can sometimes both identify and treat a bleeding source.
