Upper GI Endoscopy

Upper GI Endoscopy is a procedure that uses a flexible endoscope with a camera to examine the lining of the upper digestive tract, including the food pipe, stomach and first part of the small intestine. It may be used to investigate or treat selected upper-GI symptoms and conditions.

At Triveni Superspeciality Clinic, Endoscopy is a Gastroenterology procedure associated with Dr. Sarvjeet Kumar. His Gastroenterology procedures include both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

Why may Endoscopy be advised?

Depending on the clinical situation, upper GI Endoscopy may help evaluate symptoms such as persistent upper abdominal complaints, vomiting, difficulty swallowing or suspected upper-GI bleeding, and it may allow tissue sampling or selected treatment during the procedure.

Having one of these symptoms does not automatically mean that you require Endoscopy.

Preparing for Endoscopy

General preparation for upper GI Endoscopy can include discussing medical history, allergies and medicines with the doctor, fasting before the procedure and arranging appropriate transport home where sedation is used. Patients should not independently stop or change medicines, including blood thinners, without medical instruction.

Exact fasting, medicine and arrival instructions are provided when the procedure is arranged.

What happens during Endoscopy?

During a typical upper GI Endoscopy, an endoscope is carefully passed through the mouth into the upper digestive tract while the internal lining is viewed on a monitor. Depending on the indication, small tissue samples or therapeutic interventions may also be performed.
